Google Hangouts App Removed From Google Play Store & App Store – Replaced by Google Chat

Google Hangouts Application for iOS and Android will be replaced by Google Chat, having a similar chat service to the predecessor.

Google Hangouts App Replaced by Google Chat
According to a report by 9to5Google, Google is removing the Hangouts mobile app from official app stores like Apple Store and Google Playstore since they’ll be focused on the newer version of the app known as Google Chat.
However, despite the removal from Google, Android users with the app prior to the removal will still be able to view the app in the list of apps installed previously (device > Manage > Not Installed), but they won’t be able to see it via the search results.
New users will not be able to download the discontinued Hangout chat app on Android and iOS via the official app store. It has been a while since Google decided to replace the app, that was since November 2018 it was reported, it lead the company to transition Workspace users from Hangouts to Meet in October 2020.
Furthermore, despite the discontinuation of the app, its functionality for the app remains the same in the meantime. So users will still be able to use the app as it was without restriction or service disruption on their iPhone and Android smartphones.
However, users who haven’t downloaded Google Chat on their smartphone or tablet have only two options once the Hangouts app gets disabled – the first option is to make use of the Gmail app that comes integrated with Chat and Meet support or download the Google Chat app on their phones.

YouTube Timed Reactions Feature Added – Lets users React to Videos with Emojis

Google is testing a new YouTube timed reactions feature on its mobile apps that allow users to react to specific moments in a video with up to 8 emojis. This could be a useful replacement for the removed YouTube dislike counts for videos.

    YouTube Timed Reactions

YouTube is reported testing this feature as an experiment, so this could mean there will be changes or improvements to the feature. The announcement on YouTube’s support website two days ago revealed they are rolling out a new timed reactions experiment to users after receiving positive feedback about its timed comments beta feature.

YouTube further explained what the new timed reactions experiment will look like. They said when a user is watching a video, they will be able to react to a specific moment in the video by opening the comment section and tapping on the reaction panel. This section will also show users’ crowd reactions. However, Google selected a few channels that will be part of this experiment, so for now, it is not available to the public.

    YouTube Timed Reactions

Google says as part of the new YouTube timed reactions experiment, they will test “multiple sets” of reactions while adding or removing reactions based on user feedback.

There is currently no news on if the new timed reaction experiment will roll out to all users, nor if it will be available on the PC version of YouTube since the announcement shows timed reactions in action on the YouTube app on a smartphone.

Guardiola also revealed the next action Man City will take after their elimination from the Champions League at the hands of Real Madrid.

Man City lost to Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg tie at the Santiago Bernabeu following a brace from Rodrygo and a strike from Benzema.

Riyad Mahrez did score for the Premier League Champions as Guardiola’s men lost 6-5 on aggregate, having won 4-3 in the first leg last week at the Etihad.

Speaking to BT Sport after the game, Guardiola said: “It is simple. In the first-half we didn’t have a game, we were not good enough. But we didn’t suffer much. After we scored the goal we were better. We found out the tempo and our game and the players were comfortable.”

“It’s not like in the last 10 minutes they attack and attack and you suffer. It didn’t happen. They put a lot of players in the box, with Militao, Rodrygo, Vinicius, Benzema and they put in crosses and scored two goals.

“Now we need to process that and come back, with our people at home and the last four games we have.”

Manchester City midfielder, Fernandinho, on Wednesday, equaled Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba’s Champions League appearance record.

UCL: Man City's Fernandinho equals Chelsea legend, Drogba's record

Fernandinho’s appearance for Manchester City against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg fixture means the Brazilian has now matched Drogba’s record that stood for seven years.

After replacing Riyad Mahrez with five minutes left on the clock, Feranandinho, who turned 37 years on Wednesday, became the oldest player to play in the Champions League on his birthday since Drogba (in 2015).

Drogba, who enjoyed a trophy-laden career at Chelsea before retiring, achieved the feat on March 11, 2015, when Chelsea clashed against Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge.

Fortunately, the former Ivory Coast captain was among the goalscorers as the game ended in a 2-2 draw after the final whistle.

Meanwhile, Fernandinho could not help Pep Guardiola’s side as they lost 3-1 against Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-final second leg tie at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

Real Madrid manager, Carlo Ancelotti has admitted they needed a bit of luck to eliminate Manchester City from the Champions League.

The newly-crowned LaLiga champions lost 4-3 at the Etihad last week and were widely expected to lose out to City.

Although Riyad Mahrez opened the scoring for the Premier League champions, Madrid fought back to win 3-1 and qualify for the final.

“To explain it, it’s not that simple.

“Just when everyone thought City were through, one little detail can change everything.

“To win a game like this, you also have to have a bit of luck,” Ancelotti told the media afterwards.

Los Blancos will now face Liverpool in the final on May 28.

Los Blancos produced another comeback in their 3-1 semi-final second leg win over Manchester City on Wednesday.

Riyad Mahrez scored in the 73rd minute to put City 5-3 up in the tie, but Rodrygo netted twice in two minutes and Karim Benzema converted an extra-time penalty, to ensure it is Madrid that will play Liverpool in Paris on May 28.

It’s the latest unlikely turnaround for the LaLiga champions, who had also trailed to Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16 and Chelsea in the quarter-finals before rallying late to advance.

“Something strange has happened. We’ve had fantastic nights. We’ve played against very strong teams, teams seen as candidates to win the Champions League.

“The players never gave up. It’s special here. Nobody thought Real Madrid would play another final this year, and we’re there,” Ancelotti said.

Russian tech developers are currently working on an alternative platform to Google’s App Store, plan to launch it on May 9th, which is a national holiday in Russia that celebrates victory in World War Two.

Russians Plan to Launch Google Playstore Alternative

Due to the crisis between Ukraine and Russia in late February, YouTube and Google Play suspended all payment-based services in Russia, including subscriptions.

“Unfortunately, Russians can no longer normally use Google Play to buy apps, and developers have lost their source of income,” said Vladimir Zykov, director of projects at Digital Platforms, an organization focused on digital development. “This is why we have created a Russian app shop, NashStore,” Zykov added in a statement.

NashStore, the new Russian app shop meaning in English is “OurStore”, implying it is a Russian own platform. Also, the statement said that it will serve Android mobile devices and should ultimately be compatible with Russian Mir bank cards

Early March, Google said it had blocked mobile apps connected to RT and Sputnik from its Play store, just after they had removed the Russian state publishers from its news-related features. Russia seemed to have retaliated by blocking news aggregator service Google News in the country this week while accusing it of spreading false information about the conflict.

Not only did Google limit its services from Russia, but other tech companies have also done the same over the past months.

Facebook Messenger Latest Update Introduces Shortcuts Feature

Facebook Messenger has released new features for its social media platform. iOS and Android users will now be able to make use of shortcut commands in the chat window to perform several tasks such as notifying everyone in a group or silently sending a message without notifying other users.

    Facebook Messenger Shortcuts

On Tuesday, the Meta-owned messaging service revealed that Shortcuts for Facebook Messenger on Android and iOS will be available starting today – Wednesday. The shortcut feature allows users to type @everyone which sends a notification to all users in the chat to get the attention of all group members.

Furthermore, users can use the new Shortcuts on Messenger to notify a group silently by using the /silent command. Messages sent using this command will not notify the users about the message, so they will have to open the chat to see the message. Such a feature can already be found on Telegram, a very useful tool that applies to both groups and channel admins.

As for the availability, both the /silent and @everyone Shortcuts are publicly available to Facebook Messenger users on iOS and Android devices starting today, according to the company. Meta is also working on adding the ability for users to search for and send GIFs to users and group chats via the /gif shortcut command. Other commands not mentioned so far include/shrug and /tableflip commands to send tableflip “(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻” and shrug “¯_(ツ)_/¯” emoticons on Messenger.

The above three commands will be available on Messenger for iOS devices in the coming weeks. While Messenger for USA users will be able to use the /pay command to send and receive money in the future, the company said.
